– No, it’s too bad that your health is going away. We are used to the fact that if we don’t eat, we lose weight. And a sharp restriction of food provokes:
- inflammatory processes in the gastrointestinal tract
- formation of gallstones in the gallbladder
- increased load on the liver, kidneys, because they can not cope with the processing of large amounts of protein
- increased fragility of hair and nails
The pounds will go away, but mostly water, not fat. And they will return as soon as you return to your usual diet.
What about fashion weight loss marathons?
They promise fast and incredible results and show a lot of photos from participants.
– Marathons are my pain as a doctor. Among my patients, there are a lot of girls who have passed such programs. How many restrictions they had to go through with terrible diets that are compiled and advertised in social networks by people without an academic education! There is also a psychological aspect here: racing with other participants negatively affects self-esteem and makes you eat less and less. But no matter what results the participants of the programs achieve, the weight returns with interest, unlike health and money spent. And no one is responsible for this.
And not less fashionable interval fasting?
— This method can be used if you do not feel excruciating hunger and can easily tolerate it. At the same time, you should have three full meals a day and at least one snack.
It turns out that there are no effective diets?
– Modern medicine supports the most diverse diet, if there are no individual contraindications. Any deviations, whether dieting or vegetarianism, negatively affect the state of health. Therefore, in order to lose weight, I do not recommend such methods.
How do I know if I need to lose weight or not?
— It all depends on your desire and health. If there are no health problems, it is not necessary to lose weight. In medicine, this is called metabolically favorable obesity. But you must be firmly convinced that you are healthy, which means that you still need to go to the doctor and check up. If there are metabolic changes, it is recommended to reduce weight by at least 5%. This is enough to improve your health indicators.
