Microsoft wants to buy Netflix in 2023. An impressive amount of the transaction is known
Reuters reports that Microsoft may initiate the acquisition of Netflix in 2023. The purchase is being lobbied by the company’s CEO Satya Nadella.
Microsoft has been actively expanding its business since its founding by acquiring other companies. There are already 273 firms on the list of Microsoft acquisitions, but the company began to conclude the most high-profile deals after Nadella (an American top manager of Indian origin) headed it in 2014.
As you may have heard, with the latest acquisition – the game studio Activision Blizzard, Microsoft has some problems. The merger is opposed by Sony, the US Federal Trade Commission and regulators in several other countries. But the acquisition of Netflix, if it does take place, will be much easier to present to US and European antitrust agencies, yet the streaming service is not a core business for Microsoft.
Moreover, the two companies are already quite closely cooperating. It was Microsoft that became a key advertising partner for Netflix for a new service – subscriptions with built-in ads. Microsoft President Brad Smith is on the board of Netflix, and the streaming service’s apps are already running on Windows and Xbox.
Netflix, which for the first time in history is suffering from a decline in the number of subscribers, was valued at $190 billion according to Reuters . Microsoft has that kind of money. Of course, such an impressive investment will not pay off quickly, but Satya Nadella is used to taking risks and knows how to look to the future. It looks like Microsoft could actually take over Netflix in 2023, especially if the deal with Activision Blizzard ends up being blocked.
